The brood chamber is the space where the queen lays and where the colony holds its winter stores. It is the part of the hive that stays in place year-round.

The size

Systems differ considerably in frame depth. The choice determines how the brood nest is arranged:

• One deep chamber: Continuous brood nest, straightforward assessment; heavy frames
• Two shallower chambers: Lighter to lift, finer control of space; the brood nest spans two boxes

Neither is better; what matters is keeping to one system that is common in your area.

The winter stores

This is why brood chamber configuration genuinely matters. The cluster moves upward as stores are consumed.

In a two-chamber system the stores sit above the cluster — exactly where they belong. In a single chamber, the beekeeper must ensure there is sealed store above the cluster.

Managing space

• Too little space triggers swarming
• Too much space cannot be kept warm or defended
• At wintering, reduce to what the colony covers

Comb renewal

The brood chamber is where old comb accumulates: spores, residues and cocoons that narrow the cells.

Replacing a fixed proportion of brood frames each year is common practice. Dark comb goes first.

The queen excluder

Separates brood chamber from supers so no brood ends up in the harvest. It costs some throughput; some beekeepers work without one and accept brood in the first super.

Practical points

• Put the year on newly fitted frames
• Return frames in the same order
• Scrape propolis from the rebates; otherwise every job gets harder
