Foundationless beekeeping lets the bees build their own comb without a wax sheet, guided only by a starter strip or a shaped top bar.

How it is done

• A narrow strip of foundation, a wooden wedge or a bevelled top bar gives the bees a line to build from
• Frames must be strictly vertical; comb built at an angle cannot be lifted out
• New frames go between drawn combs, which keeps the building straight

What speaks for it

• No purchased wax: The residue problem of collected wax is avoided entirely
• The bees choose their own cell size and the proportion of drone comb
• Fresh wax every time, which suits regular comb renewal
• Lower cost

The residue point is the strongest argument: foundation made from collected wax is the main route by which fat-soluble substances return to the hive.

What speaks against it

• More drone comb. Left to themselves, bees build a substantial proportion of drone cells
• Fragile comb: Fresh natural comb tears easily in an extractor and must be handled carefully
• Crooked building if frames are not level or if too many are given at once
• Building costs the colony energy that does not go into stores
• It only works during a flow and in warm weather

The drone question

More drone comb is not simply a loss. Drones are needed for mating, and drone comb has a role in Varroa control through cutting.

But the same fact cuts both ways: drone brood stays capped longest and the mite prefers it. Unmanaged drone comb in a colony is a mite nursery.

So the drone comb must be managed — either cut as a control measure, or deliberately retained in colonies selected for drone rearing. Not both in the same colony.

Practical points

• Give one frame at a time, between drawn combs
• Keep hives level
• Handle fresh comb gently; extract slowly
• Wire the frames if the comb will be extracted

Where it fits

It suits beekeepers with few colonies who want a closed wax cycle and are willing to accept slower build-up and more careful handling.
