Lifting the jelly from the cup is done with a spatula, a small spoon or a suction device. The choice determines speed and how much product is left behind.

The options

• Spatula or small spoon: Cheap and simple; slow, and more is left behind
• Hand suction device: Faster, touches the product less, leaves less behind
• Vacuum system: For larger quantities; requires investment and cleaning

Material

Prolonged contact with metal is avoided with royal jelly. Wood, glass and food-grade plastic are preferred.

For the tool that means a wooden or plastic spatula over a metal spoon, unless contact is very brief.

The harvest sequence

• The larva is removed first with forceps
• Then the jelly is lifted from the cup
• It goes straight into a dark, airtight jar
• The jar goes straight into refrigeration

Every step that costs time costs quality; jelly is sensitive to heat, light and air.

Speed as a quality factor

This is why the tool matters. With a hundred cups, the difference between a spatula and a suction device is not only labour time but how long the first harvested product stood exposed.

Cleaning

• Wash with warm water after use and dry completely
• Leave no detergent residue; it passes into the product
• With a suction device, do not forget the tube and collection vessel
• Store everything dry and closed

What to buy first

For small quantities a spatula suffices. A suction device becomes worthwhile once harvesting in series — and then it pays quickly.
