A range of products is marketed as improving colony health or productivity. The evidence behind them varies considerably.

What a colony actually needs

• Carbohydrate: Nectar, or in its absence sugar syrup
• Protein: Pollen, preferably from several plants
• Water

For a colony with varied forage and adequate stores, supplements generally add little.

Where supplementation has a point

• Persistent pollen shortage, for example in monoculture
• Starting brood rearing early, before the first pollen flow
• Colonies used continuously for royal jelly
• After a long forage interruption

In all these cases the supplement is a stopgap, not an improvement on natural pollen.

Why variety cannot be replaced

The amino acid composition of pollen varies by plant species. One source gives an incomplete package, and an artificial mix approximates natural variety only in part.

Improving the forage therefore does more than any supplement — and it supports wild pollinators at the same time.

Assessing claims

• Ask what research stands behind a claim and under what conditions it was done
• Trial a product on a few colonies and keep untreated colonies alongside
• Be cautious with products that promise everything at once
• Check what is actually in it; some products are sugar syrup with an additive

Where it goes wrong

A supplement does not solve a problem whose cause lies elsewhere. A colony weakened by Varroa, damp or a failing queen does not improve with a feeding product.

The order is: find the cause, then supplement.

Rules

What is given to a colony can end up in honey. Products carrying a medical claim are veterinary medicines and fall under those rules; give nothing with supers on.
