Adding a super means giving the colony new space. It looks simple, but its timing directly affects both swarming and yield.

Why timing matters

Lack of space is the strongest trigger of swarming. When the queen cannot find room to lay, the colony prepares to divide.

On the other hand, space given too early and in excess also causes problems: the colony cannot defend or warm what it cannot cover, the edge brood chills and pests move in.

Correct timing lies between the two.

When to add

A common criterion: give a new box when about three quarters of the existing space is full.

Signs to look for:

• Most frames covered with bees
• The brood chamber largely full
• Storage begun in the outer frames
• A flow approaching

Space must be given before the flow; giving it after the flow has started is being late.

Where to add it

There are two common approaches:

• On top: The new box goes at the top. Simple; the bees may take a little time to move up
• Underneath: The new box goes below the full one, above the brood. The bees' tendency to fill a gap makes them work faster

In cool weather adding on top is safer; it disturbs the colony's heat balance less.

Drawn comb or foundation

• Drawn comb: The bees fill it directly; the most productive option during a flow
• Foundation: The bees must draw it first, which takes energy. But it is necessary for comb renewal

The practical approach is to mix the two: putting foundation between drawn combs directs the bees to draw it.

Queen excluder

It keeps the super free of brood. Against that it can slow a weak colony or one working undrawn foundation.

If it is used, placing drawn comb immediately above the excluder helps the bees move up.

Reducing space

Space management is not one-way. When the flow ends and in autumn the space is taken back.

• Empty and unused frames are removed
• Surplus boxes are taken off
• The colony is reduced to a volume it can warm

A colony wintering in more space than it needs loses both heat and stores.

Summary

Space is the most direct signal a beekeeper gives a colony. A super given in time prevents swarming and raises yield; given late it triggers swarming, given early it strains the colony.
