A beekeeper with their own wax can have it made into foundation or process it themselves. Either closes the wax cycle.

Why it matters

Foundation is made from collected wax. Fat-soluble substances accumulate precisely in wax and return to the hive that way — affecting even beekeepers who treat carefully themselves.

Which wax

Cappings wax is the cleanest source there is. It has never been brood and carries the fewest residues.

Wax from old brood comb yields little and is dark with residues. Keeping cappings wax separate is the heart of the whole matter; mixing it with old comb degrades the best product you can get.

The steps

• Melting: In a water bath or with a solar melter; not directly over a flame
• Filtering: Removing dirt, cocoons and debris
• Clarifying: Letting it set and scraping the underside, where the dirt collects
• Rolling or casting into sheets with cell bases

The equipment

• A wax melter with indirect heating
• Filters and stainless steel vessels
• Rollers with the cell pattern, or casting moulds
• A cooling bath

Temperature

Wax must not be overheated; that degrades it, and larvae later lie directly in it.

Working in a water bath is not fussiness but necessity.

Safety

Molten wax is flammable and the vapour ignites if overheated. Never directly over a flame, keep water to hand, and do not leave unattended.

The practical route

Most beekeepers have their wax made into foundation by a processor. What counts is that you get your own wax back — ask about that when handing it in.
