Swarming is the natural reproduction of the colony. It is not a disease or a mistake; for the colony it is the purpose of the year. For the beekeeper it means losing half the workforce and half the harvest.

Swarm management is therefore less about prevention than about redirection: letting the colony's urge to divide happen under the beekeeper's control.

What triggers swarming

  • Lack of space: No empty cells left for the queen to lay in
  • Congestion: Bees packed so densely that pheromone distribution breaks down
  • An old queen: Pheromone output declines and the colony receives a renewal signal
  • A strong flow: Abundance turns the colony towards reproduction
  • Genetics: Some lines are markedly more prone to swarm

None of these is sufficient alone; when they coincide the colony crosses the threshold.

Early warning signs

  • Eggs laid in queen cups
  • Queen cells at the bottom and edges of frames
  • Increasing drone brood
  • No empty cells left in the brood chamber
  • Reduced foraging, bees hanging in front of the hive

An egg in a queen cup means preparations have begun; it is not yet too late. The capping of the first queen cell is the critical threshold.

The rule of timing

The prime swarm usually leaves with the old queen around the time the first queen cell is capped. From egg to capped cell takes about eight days.

This means the inspection interval must be shorter than eight days. Inspecting every ten days misses the swarm.

Preventive methods

  • Give space in time. Empty frames in the brood chamber and a super above, before congestion develops
  • Take sealed brood. Moving a frame from a strong colony to a weak one lowers pressure and strengthens the other colony
  • Requeen. A young queen shows markedly less tendency to swarm
  • Ventilate. A hot, airless hive triggers swarming
  • Use a drone frame. It provides drone space and contributes to Varroa control

Cutting out queen cells is not a solution on its own. If the colony has decided, it will make more. Removing the symptom without removing the cause does not work.

Redirection: the artificial swarm

If the colony has begun preparations, the most reliable course is to make the swarm yourself. The queen and some bees are moved to a new hive; the queen cells remain in the old one.

The colony's urge to divide is satisfied and no swarm issues. The operation also creates a natural broodless period, opening a favourable window for Varroa treatment.

If a swarm has issued

  • The swarm usually settles nearby and waits for a time
  • During this period it can be collected; it is a calm cluster, because the bees have filled themselves with honey
  • The collected swarm is hived and fed
  • In the colony left behind, surplus queen cells are reduced; otherwise secondary swarms issue and the colony dwindles

Summary

The essence of swarm management is not the calendar but regular and sufficiently frequent inspection. A beekeeper who knows the eight-day window can turn the colony's decision to their own advantage.
