A pollen trap intercepts part of the incoming pollen. The forager must pass through a grid that strips the loads from her legs.

Placement

• At the entrance: Simple to fit and empty; all bees pass through
• Bottom-mounted: Less disruption to flight behaviour
• Top-mounted: Requires hive modification; the tray stays drier

The grid size

This determines everything. Too tight and the bees become discouraged and look for another way in; too wide and almost nothing is stripped.

The grid must also not block drones and queens; a bypass is needed.

Emptying

Daily. Fresh pollen spoils within hours and goes mouldy in a damp tray.

A rain cover prevents the tray filling with water — without one, a single shower can destroy the harvest.

What it costs the colony

This is the heart of the judgement. Pollen is the protein source; without it no brood can be reared.

• The trap slows brood rearing
• Prolonged use weakens the colony
• Do not use before or during the rearing of winter bees

Common practice: use it periodically rather than continuously, opening the grid at intervals.

Role allocation

Let production colonies supply pollen and keep honey colonies free. Expecting everything from one colony gives mediocre results in all of it.

After harvesting

• Dry at low temperature, or freeze
• Sort out bee parts and debris
• Store airtight, dark and cool

Rules

Do not harvest during a treatment period. Allergic reactions to pollen are possible and should be stated.
