When grafting, the rearing frame must be stable and at the right height. A simple stand makes the difference between precise and hurried work.

What a stand does

• Holds the rearing frame still so the tool does not slip
• Brings the cups to eye level and into the light
• Holds the cups at the right angle so the larva does not tip
• Leaves both hands free

Why stability matters

A young larva must be lifted from beneath without being turned or pressed. If the frame moves at that moment, the larva is damaged or ends up lying wrongly in the cup.

A larva placed on her back does not develop properly. That is no small matter; it is one of the commonest causes of failure.

Height and angle

The cups should tilt towards you so the light reaches the base and you can look straight in.

Working over a frame lying flat means looking into a shadow — exactly what you do not want.

A simple solution suffices

A wooden trestle with a recess for the frame bar does the job. No special equipment is needed; what counts is that the frame does not move.

The workspace around it

• Out of wind and sun
• Not in a cold room
• A damp cloth nearby against drying
• The source frame of larvae close at hand and covered
• The light source aimed and cool

Transport

If working outdoors at the hive, the stand should be light and portable. An insulated box for carrying the rearing frame protects the larvae from chilling on the way.
