Between sealing and transfer to the mating nuclei, cells must stay at temperature. Holding cabinets exist for this.

Why warmth is so critical

The brood nest is held around thirty-five degrees, very precisely. A cell that chills suffers lasting damage invisible in the queen.

She emerges, looks normal and starts laying normally — but performs less well and lives shorter. That only becomes apparent a season later.

Where the risk lies

• Removing the bars from the cell builder
• Assessing and sorting cells
• Transporting to another apiary
• Waiting until the mating nuclei are ready

What a holding cabinet does

It keeps cells at brood nest temperature and protects them from draught and knocks. In larger rearing programmes that gives flexibility in scheduling.

The simple alternative

For small numbers an insulated container suffices: the bars go in upright, out of wind and sun, and the time outside the colony stays short.

Working quickly is more valuable here than equipment.

Handling cells

• Keep them upright; tipping or inverting damages the pupa
• Do not shake
• Do not squeeze when detaching
• Some humidity; very dry air is unfavourable

The time window

• Sealed: about eight days after grafting
• Emergence: about twelve days after grafting

Transfer happens within that window, close to emergence but not past it. If a queen emerges in the cabinet, she destroys the other cells — unless they are individually in cell protectors.
