Instrumental insemination is the only method in which the paternal side of mating is fully determined. It requires a stereo microscope and associated equipment.

Why magnification is needed

The work takes place at a scale that cannot be controlled by eye. The operations require sight of details a fraction of a millimetre across.

A stereo microscope gives depth perception, which matters more in this work than high magnification.

What else is involved

  • A holder in which the queen is secured
  • Instruments for the procedure
  • Anaesthesia equipment using carbon dioxide
  • A cool, strong light source
  • A stable, vibration-free workspace

Why it exists

With free mating the paternal side is unknown: a queen mates in the air with many drones from a wide area.

A remote mating station closes much of that gap. Insemination closes it entirely.

For breeding programmes working with defined lines and managing inbreeding, that is the only means giving certainty.

The limits

  • Training: It is a skill learned, not taken from a manual
  • Time: Considerable per queen
  • Cost of equipment
  • Not suitable for large-scale production

For whom

Research institutions, breeding programmes and a few specialised producers. For most beekeepers it is not a practical route.

What is within reach

Improving the drone pool locally by leaving drone comb in selected colonies. That is the measure any beekeeper can take and the one that makes most difference at regional scale.
