Many hive systems are in use around the world. They differ in dimensions, box arrangement and frame size; all rest on the same basic principle.

The common principle: movable frames

All modern hives rest on movable frames, made possible by bee space: bees leave open any gap of roughly six to nine millimetres.

Without movable frames there can be no inspection, no harvesting and no disease control. That is the fundamental limit of traditional fixed-comb hives.

Vertical systems

Boxes stacked on top of one another; the commonest group.

  • Single large brood box: Gives the queen an uninterrupted brood area and suits natural behaviour; the cost is the weight of the box
  • Multi-box types: Boxes are smaller and lighter and space can be adjusted more finely. The brood area is spread across more than one box

The choice depends largely on the beekeeper's physical capacity and way of working.

Horizontal systems

Frames stand side by side in a single plane. No boxes need lifting, which is a marked advantage for the back.

Against that they are hard to move and the space for honey is limited. Some types can hold two colonies in separate compartments.

Small units

  • Nucleus: A small colony on a few frames; used for queen mating, reserves and splits
  • Mating box: A very small unit set up only for a queen to emerge and mate

Traditional hives

Fixed-comb hives without movable frames: logs, skeps and similar structures, still used in many parts of the world.

Their advantages are low cost and local materials. Their limits are serious: the colony cannot be inspected, disease cannot be seen, and harvesting usually destroys the comb.

Materials

  • Timber: Breathes, can be repaired, can be disinfected by flaming. Needs maintenance and is heavy
  • Foam: Light and well insulated. Scratches and holes are the weak point; disinfection is limited

The criterion for choosing

The best system is the one common in your area.

The reason is practical rather than technical: you can borrow frames, buy colonies and find help when something goes wrong. Mixing dimensions makes frame exchange impossible and leaves you alone in an emergency.

Climate matters too: in damp regions insulation, ventilation and weatherproofing have to work together.
