Honey is a food, and in some contexts a traditional remedy. What is written here separates what is well supported from what is not.

What it contains

Honey is mostly sugar — chiefly fructose and glucose — with a small amount of water. Beyond that it contains enzymes, organic acids, minerals, small quantities of vitamins, and phenolic compounds derived from the source plants.

The nutritional content is small in quantity. What distinguishes honey is not its concentration of nutrients but its combination of properties.

Reasonably well supported

  • An energy source: Its sugars are absorbed rapidly
  • Cough in children: Studies indicate it can ease night-time cough. It must never be given to infants under one year
  • Wound care: Medical-grade honey is used in some clinical settings on burns and wounds. This is a sterilised, standardised product — not table honey
  • Antimicrobial activity: Low water content, acidity and hydrogen peroxide formation limit microbial growth. This is measured in the laboratory; its effect in the body is a separate question

Where evidence is limited

Claims about allergy, immunity, digestive complaints and many other areas rest on limited or inconsistent evidence. Popular claims often run far ahead of the research.

Variation in composition is one reason: honeys from different plants and regions differ chemically, so results do not transfer directly.

Safety

  • Not for infants under one year. The risk of infant botulism. This is an absolute rule
  • People with diabetes: Honey raises blood sugar; it is not a substitute for sugar
  • Some honeys are toxic. Honey from certain plants can cause poisoning; this is a real and documented risk in some regions
  • Allergy: Rare but possible

Storage and quality

Excessive heating breaks down enzymes and raises the marker used to assess ageing. Storing honey cool, dark and sealed preserves both quality and reputation.

Crystallisation is natural and not a fault; it does not indicate adulteration.

What the producer may say

In most countries it is prohibited to claim that a food treats disease. Describing what the product is, where it comes from and how it was produced is both lawful and more persuasive.

Traceable, separately harvested and well-stored honey needs no health claim to distinguish it.
