In horizontal hives frames stand side by side rather than stacked. The colony grows in a single plane and no boxes need lifting.

Structure

A long body holds a row of frames. The unused part is closed off with a division board and the space opened as the colony grows.

Some types hold two colonies in separate compartments.

Strengths

• No boxes to lift. The greatest advantage, for the back
• Simple inspection: Frames are lifted in turn; no heavy box is carried
• Easy space adjustment: The division board is moved
• Simple to build: Can be made from local materials
• Heat management: The cluster moves horizontally, which suits some climates

Weaknesses

• Hard to move. Not suited to migratory beekeeping
• Limited honey space: Boxes cannot be added as in vertical systems
• Takes up room
• Non-standard: Equipment and frames can be hard to find
• Care in wintering: The cluster moves sideways, so stores must be beside it and reachable

The difference in wintering

In a vertical hive the cluster moves upwards and the stores must be above it. In a horizontal hive it moves sideways.

This changes the winter arrangement: stores must lie beside the cluster in an unbroken run. An empty frame in between can block the cluster's access.

Top-bar types

Some horizontal hives use top bars without foundation, and the bees build comb freely.

The approach is low cost but brings limits: fragile comb, difficulty extracting, and frames that are not interchangeable.

Who it suits

It suits beekeepers working in a fixed apiary, who struggle with lifting and who keep a small number of colonies.

It does not suit migratory beekeepers or high-volume production.
