Labour is the most underestimated limit in beekeeping. Equipment can be bought and knowledge learned; time cannot.

The work is not evenly spread

The workload is very unevenly distributed across the year. Most of it falls in a few weeks:

  • Swarming season: Every colony checked every eight days
  • Harvest: Clearing, extracting, processing
  • Late summer: Measuring and treating for Varroa, then feeding

Those three periods determine how many colonies you can actually manage.

The swarming season calculation

This is the sharpest limit. Work out how many colonies you can inspect in eight days; that is your maximum.

A beekeeper who cannot keep up stretches the interval. The result: swarms lost, disease seen late, and losses rising — precisely the things that make beekeeping expensive.

Clashing weeks

The thing most often forgotten in planning is that tasks coincide.

  • Queen rearing falls in the same weeks as swarm checks
  • Harvesting and the late-summer Varroa treatment chase each other
  • Autumn feeding and reducing fall together

Map the workload week by week; where weeks clash, move or drop a task.

Saving time

  • Work in batches. All hives at a site in one round, not back and forth per colony
  • Prepare in advance. Wiring frames, painting hives and readying equipment belong in winter
  • Write the next step at the hive; it saves reassessing from scratch next visit
  • Use one hive system. Mixed dimensions cost time every season
  • Limit the number of sites, or put them on one route

Where not to economise

There is one place where saving time does not pay: the inspection interval in the swarming season.

Everything gained there is lost with the swarms.

Recognising the limit

Keeping more colonies than you can care for yields less than keeping fewer well — and it is worse for the bees.

If the work runs away from you, reducing colony numbers is a sound decision, not a defeat.
