In grafting, the light source is not an accessory but the instrument that determines the outcome.

Why

What most strongly determines queen quality is the age of the larva. The younger, the better.

A very young larva is barely larger than a comma and lies at the bottom of a deep cell. To choose her you must see her — and without good light you see only the older, larger larvae.

Poor light therefore leads systematically to grafting larvae that are too old. The result is a queen that looks normal, starts laying normally, but has fewer ovarioles and a shorter life.

What the lamp must do

  • Strong: Enough to light the base of the cell
  • Cool: Heat from the lamp dries the larvae — this is the most important requirement
  • Directional: The beam must reach into the cell, not past it
  • Portable: Work is often done outdoors or in a shed

Head lamp or fixed lamp

A head lamp shines wherever you look and leaves both hands free — for most beekeepers the most practical solution.

A fixed lamp on a stand gives more light but must be aimed each time.

Conditions around the light

  • Work out of wind and sun
  • Not in a cold room; chilling the larva causes lasting damage
  • Some humidity helps against drying
  • Keep the time between removal and return short

Magnification

For anyone who struggles with fine close vision, a magnifying lamp or a head loupe is the answer — or else a rearing system without grafting.

Working on with poor sight costs no time but quality.
