Performance testing means comparing colonies against measurable criteria. It moves selection in breeding from memory onto data.

Why testing is needed

Assessment based on memory is misleading. A colony that looked good last summer is easily overrated; one caught on a bad day is unfairly discarded.

Testing provides comparison against the same criteria and under the same conditions.

Traits measured

• Temperament: How the colony reacts when the hive is opened
• Steadiness on the comb: Whether the bees run when a frame is lifted
• Hygienic behaviour: How fast infected or dead brood is removed
• Overwintering: Strength coming out of winter and stores consumed
• Swarming tendency: How often the colony prepares in a season
• Varroa increase: The change in mite level under the same conditions
• Yield: Honey, pollen or propolis
• Brood pattern: Tightness and continuity

The condition for a fair comparison

Test results are meaningful only if the colonies are kept under the same conditions.

• In the same apiary
• In the same hive type with the same space
• With the same feeding and the same interventions
• Starting from similar strength

Comparing colonies in different apiaries leads to mistaking a difference in forage for a difference in genetics.

Scoring

No elaborate system is needed. A simple score under a few headings at each inspection is enough.

What matters is consistency: the same scale, the same person, comparable conditions.

Do not trust a single measurement

An observation at one inspection can mislead. The colony may have behaved differently that day because of the weather, the forage or a previous intervention.

Observations repeated through the season reveal what is consistent.

Using the result

• Rear queens from the best colonies
• Requeen the worst
• Leave drone comb in selected colonies

Those three steps alone markedly change the character of an apiary within a few years.
