The basis of decision-making in beekeeping is measurement. Eye and experience are valuable, but an observation not turned into a number cannot be compared.

Refractometer

It measures the moisture content of honey. It is the cheapest and most decisive piece of equipment there is.

Honey with high moisture ferments and the whole batch is lost. If a partly capped frame is to be extracted, measurement is compulsory.

It requires regular calibration; an uncalibrated instrument gives misleading results.

Hive scale

If only one sensor is to be bought, this should be it. A change in weight can be interpreted directly:

  • Increase: There is a flow
  • Static or falling: The flow has ended; robbing and feeding are on the agenda
  • Sudden drop: A swarm may have issued
  • Accelerating decline in winter: A sign of trouble

One scale per apiary is usually enough; colonies in the same area meet the same forage.

The scale also answers the most important question: there are flowers, but is there a flow?

Varroa monitoring tools

  • Wash jar: For sugar or alcohol washes; gives a measured, repeatable result
  • Floor tray: Collects natural mite drop. Good for a trend, weak for a decision
  • Uncapping fork: For opening drone brood; gives early warning

Whatever the method, the critical thing is consistency. Alternating between sugar and alcohol makes results incomparable.

Temperature and humidity sensors

The brood nest is held at about thirty-five degrees. A stable high reading indicates brood; a fall and fluctuation indicate that brood has ended or the colony has weakened.

This is valuable for timing the winter Varroa treatment: it detects the start of the broodless period.

A humidity sensor gives early warning of ventilation problems and a leaking roof in winter.

Disease test kits

Field kits give a rapid preliminary result for diseases such as the foulbroods. Definitive diagnosis is made by laboratory analysis.

A positive kit result may create a reporting obligation; inform the competent authority before acting alone.

The limit of sensors

A sensor tells you that something has changed, not why. Finding the cause still means opening the hive.

Data that is not interpreted is useless; accumulating graphs is not making decisions.

The cheapest tool

A pen and a notebook. No device gives the power of comparison that a well-kept record does.
