Royal jelly production uses the same equipment as queen rearing; the difference lies in harvesting and storing the product. At that stage the cold chain becomes the decisive piece of equipment.

Production equipment

• Cups and bars: Plastic or beeswax, set on a bar
• Collection frame: Carries several bars
• Grafting tool: Transfers the larva
• Light and magnification: To select day-old larvae

Harvesting tools

• Larva removal forceps: The larva must be taken out before the jelly is collected
• Collection spoon or spatula: Wood, glass or food-grade plastic preferred
• Vacuum collector: Adds speed at scale

Prolonged contact with metal tools is avoided.

The cold chain — the real equipment

Royal jelly is sensitive to heat, light and air. It must be kept cold from the moment it is collected.

• Cool box: For carrying from the apiary to the processing area
• Refrigerator: Short-term storage
• Freezer: Long-term storage
• Dark glass containers: Light-proof and airtight

When the cold chain is broken the product looks the same but loses value. The buyer cannot detect it, which makes it a matter of the producer's honesty.

• Closed to bees
• Compliant with food hygiene: clean surfaces, washed hands, suitable clothing
• Protected from dust and direct sun

Measurement and quality

Freshness and quality are assessed by laboratory analysis. The most important thing that can be done in the field is to record the harvest date and the storage conditions.

The reality of scale

The amount of jelly obtained from a single cup is very small. Meaningful production requires many cups, a regular cycle and exact timing.

Royal jelly production should therefore be planned as a separate branch of production rather than a sideline, with the equipment and cold chain provided for in advance.
