Honey production does not begin with putting a super on the hive. It begins with going into the main flow with a colony that is ready. A colony not yet built up when the flow opens will spend that flow on its own growth and give no surplus.

A matter of timing

A worker bee needs about three weeks from egg to emergence, then another week or two to become a forager. The bees that will work the main flow were therefore laid as eggs roughly five weeks before it.

The practical consequence: spring preparation is done by calculation, not by sight. A beekeeper who waits to see the flow is already late.

egg to emergence work in hive FORAGER — works the flow egg ~3 weeks ~4–5 weeks the flow plan backwards: about five weeks A beekeeper who acts on seeing the flow is already late. Those bees had to be laid as eggs five weeks earlier.
The whole logic of spring management rests on this single calculation.

Managing supers

  • Add them in time. A super should be given before the brood chamber becomes crowded; if it is late the queen finds no room and swarming pressure rises
  • Do not give too little. Cramped space both triggers swarming and limits storage
  • Do not give too much either. A weak colony cannot defend a large space; wax moth and robbing become risks
  • Queen excluder: Keeps the super free of brood, but can slow a weak colony or one working undrawn foundation

When to harvest

The criterion is ripeness, not the calendar. When the bees have evaporated enough water they cap the cell; capping is the colony saying the honey is ready.

A frame that is mostly capped can be harvested. On a partly capped frame the moisture must be measured before extraction. Honey taken too early ferments and the whole batch is lost.

During the harvest

  • Use little smoke. Heavy smoke carries into the aroma of the honey
  • Use a bee escape. It is calmer for the colony than brushing or blowing
  • Watch for robbing. If the flow has ended, leave no comb in the open and work quickly
  • Do not leave the colony short. Calculate the winter stores; harvesting means taking the surplus above what the colony needs

The value of separate harvesting

Extracting separately by flow period and by apiary gains three things: it makes a single-flower claim defensible, it preserves differences in character, and it provides traceability if a problem arises.

Combining everything in one tank loses all three.

The line between feeding and harvesting

Syrup is not given while supers are on. The bees process it and store it in the comb; what results is not honey. This distinction is absolute, both legally and ethically.

What determines the yield

  • The colony being ready for the main flow
  • The proximity of the site to the forage
  • Weather — nectar secretion depends on temperature and humidity
  • Varroa and disease pressure
  • The age and quality of the queen
  • Not having swarmed

Most of these are determined not at harvest time but months earlier.
